2010 Top 17: Ninkendo + Anticipation = Article

Ninkendo typed up his top 17 (17?) upcoming games and asked me to post it here for his legions of fans. I tried to explain that neither of us has written an article in almost a year, but he was insistent. I wasn't going to bother, but it's a good read by a guy with a lot of knowledge and passion about the industry, so hopefully someone finds this as interesting as I do. - rfo

Only games that are definitely coming out in 2010 will be listed so nothing like Final Fantasy Versus XIII even though that would be a top 3 for me. I'm probably missing some stuff too because I just looked at a release list and picked out games I was looking forward to, but I don't know if those lists were complete or not.

Anyway, I came up with 17 games. I expect once E3 comes around and tons of new games are announced that this list will drastically change.

17. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands - I don't really know much about this game other than that the HD versions and the Wii versions are actually two completely different games so I might end up getting both. However I've loved every console Prince of Persia since the Sands of Time so I can't imagine not getting this at some point

16. Persona 3 Portable - I don't even know why I'm looking forward to this, but I am. I own both the original P3 and P3FES, but I haven't played either of them yet. I guess it's just the collector in me who needs to have every SMT game. I played through P1 and both P2's last year so I probably will get to P3 at some point this year. I hope....maybe. Anyway P3P will be something I'll want to play after I'm done with P3 so I can try it as the woman and see what changes there are.

15. Fallout: New Vegas
Release Date - Q4 2010
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/debut-trailer-fallout-new/61575

Fallout 3 was not only my introduction to the Fallout series (I had heard about it in the past, but never really paid much attention to it), it was also my introduction to the WRPG genre outside of the Diablo series. Being a completionist, I made it my mission to get visit every area in the game and do every main quest and side quest, get all the achievements, play through all the DLCs...and I loved every minute of it. I think I ended up spending about 75 hours with it total. Even if New Vegas is more of the same, I imagine the setting will allow for a much greater variety to the environments. That would probably be the only complaint about FO3 is that everything just looks the same after awhile...and the fact I was playing it on PS3 so I had to deal with all the glitches that version had. Hopefully there will be more polish in this version.

14. Sin & Punishment: Star Successor
Release Date: June 27, 2010
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/nintendo-media-sin/62272

Has Treasure ever made a bad game? I really can't think of any at the moment. I longed the play the original Sin & Punishment ever since it was featured in Nintendo Power back in 2000. I even went as far as demand that Board 8 user oliphaunt/WorldDude/whatever name you know him by search for it when he was on his trip to Japan and I would pay him for it. He failed in that quest, but luckily Nintendo answered my prayers with a Virtual Console release 3 years ago. It was just as good as I was hoping it would be and earned the #3 spot in my list of favorite N64 games (behind Star Fox 64 and Majora's Mask). As for Star Successor I can't say I've been BLOWN AWAY by the videos of it, but it does look extremely fun and I'm hoping it captures the same magic the first did. Seems like the voice acting has been improved 10-fold though, but the bad voice acting was part of the charm of the original so I don't know how I feel about that yet.

13. Arc Rise Fantasia
Release Date - June 22nd, 2010
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/jpop-trailer-arc-rise/49368

This game was supposed to be out in November what the hellllllllll. This game has dropped down a bit after hearing the English voice acting, but I've never let something like that deter me from enjoying a game. The battle system looks interesting and I'm fan of the design being done by the Eureka 7 guy. Since it looks like Tales of Graces might not make it out in English (puts in an E3 prayer), this game is currently filling it's spot as the anime cliche JRPG that I want most.

12. Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2
Release Date: Q3 2010
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/debut-trailer-naruto-shippuden/64595

Now, normally I don't like to get any anime games unless a series is complete and the game covers the whole series. It was frustrating in the SNES days with all those DBZ games that only went up to the Frieza Saga or the Cell Saga and never the whole thing. I don't mind games that are side stories though that have nothing to do with the main story like the One Piece games for Wii. Those were great. I never tried any Naruto games before, but I decided to give NUNS a shot since it covered all of the original Naruto series before Shippuden. I was convinced by the demo that it was going to be one of the most fun fighting games I've ever played, which might have been the case if the town segments in the actual game didn't take so long. I had a lot of fun with it though so I'm going to get NUNS2 even though Shippuden isn't anywhere being done with yet, but it goes all the way up to the Pain fight (and maybe more) which is a decent amount so it seems worth it. Sounds like a lot of the town stuff has been improved too so my hopes are high for this one!

11. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
Release Date: Q3 2010
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/japanese-winter-kingdom-hearts/60385

Pretty sure there's a flow chart out there that shows how there's like 10 different sora's now or something ridiculous like that. However that doesn't matter because even though the story makes no sense anymore I still have a blast playing these games. The combination of a lot of my favorite square characters along with my favorite Disney characters is still too much to resist. It helps that the trailers for this game looks awesome too. Still haven't gotten around to playing 358/2 Days yet so I should probably get on that soon too. Also the remake of Chain of Memories, but I guess that doesn't really count since it's just a remake.

10. EA Sports NBA Jam
Release Date: TBA 2010 (I'm guessing when all the other basketball games come out in late September/early October)
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/bracket-of-nba-jam/100193

Honestly I would have preferred a new NBA Hangtime, but I'll take what I can get. Arcade sports are my favorite types of sports game and basketball is my favorite sport so this is a no brainer. I love the style of 3D bodies with 2D faces too. Can't wait to constantly knock Lebron down over and over again. I also love how much fan input is going into the game. EA let the fans vote on the entire roster of the game and as you can see in the trailer above, they're also holding a tournament on Facebook to get new announcer quotes into the game. If this game has online it'll be awesome, but if it doesn't that's fine too. I've got tons of people I can play this with.

Side note: #10 was originally going to be Final Fantasy XIV Online, but I realized I was looking forward to the free beta and that once it actually comes out I probably won't be playing it since I refuse to pay monthly fees for any game.

9. Mega Man Zero Collection
Release Date: June 8th, 2010
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/debut-trailer-mega-man/65100

Speaking of wasting money, I already own all 4 Mega Man Zero games! However, you know me I'm the #1 Mega Man fan here and you better god damn believe I'm getting this collection if only as an excuse to replay the whole series. Really the only new feature here is that the E-reader system the games used in Japan will finally be included here in the game itself as they were omitted from the English versions. Anyone who denies themselves getting the entire series for only $30 though is nuts!

8. Golden Sun DS
Release Date: TBA 2010
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-09-golden-sun/50273

Okay this might be a bit of a stretch since I have no clue if this game will make it out in 2010 or not, but there was no way I couldn't include it in good conscience. I mean not really much is known at all and I'm wondering if it's being moved to the 3DS, but Golden Sun 2 ended with so many unanswered questions that I've been clamoring for a 3rd game for so long. In fact I'm even wondering if this game will have anything to do with the first 2 games at all or if it'll be Golden Sun in name only and be completely unrelated. I'm guessing E3 will tell us the truth.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4
Release Date: Q3 2010

Forgot the 7. in front of the game, but whatever.

6. Super Mario Galaxy 2
Release Date: May 23, 2010
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/new-features-super-mario/63923

Oh jeeze hype hype hype next Sunday. Actually for some reason or another I'm not as hyped for this game as I think I should be. Maybe it's just because it's still too soon from NSMBW and I'm just not ready for a new Mario game yet. SMG1 is definitely a contender for best Mario game though and the fact they're going the Majora's Mask route with SMG2 and making it harder from the beginning with the assumption you already played the first game is nothing but good news for me. In the past few weeks, Super Street Fighter IV and 3D Dot Game Heroes hasn't been able to stop me from playing Monster Hunter Tri every night, but I suspect SMG2 will be able to pull it off.

5. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Release Date: June 8th, 2010
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/tgs-09-metal-gear/56487

After Portable Ops I was wary of Peace Walker, but hearing how it was being considered MGS5 and then playing the demo and experiencing the new control scheme for myself I was a believer. Big Boss is my favorite MGS characters so if this doesn't end up being at least my 2nd favorite MGS after Snake Eater I'll be very disappointed. Loving the 2-4 player co-op. I know two guys who also have PSPs and are getting this game so we'll probably all be using the PS3 ad-hoc to play this together online. I'm sure if we need a 4th person I could pick one of you fine people here on Board 8 to play with us. I love a good sneaking mission!

4. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Release Date: Q3 2010
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/gc-09-castlevania-lords/54458

Sticking with the Kojima train, we move on to Metal Gear Solid: Belmont's Curse. No seriously I'm expecting Kojima to somehow find a way to relate Gabriel Belmont to Solid Snake because they look like the same guy. Castlevania is 0/3 in 3D games in most people's eyes (1/3 if you ask me because I thought Curse of Darkness was really good) and Kojima's here to set things right. Switching to a more God of War style gameplay might be what the game needs because the classic Castlevania style obviously wasn't working in 3D. Here's to hoping this actually turns out well and isn't another disappointment!

3. Metroid: Other M
August 31, 2010
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/gameplay-trailer-metroid-other/63872

Well what can be said about Other M that hasn't been said already. Much like how Nintendo and Sega teamed up to deliver me my dream F-Zero game, I'm expecting the team-up of Nintendo and Team Ninja to deliver my dream Metroid game. You get the best of both the 2D games and the 3D games, an actual story that expands on Samus's origins and a hybrid of Metroid and Ninja Gaiden style action. I'm in heaven just watching the trailers that I can't even imagine what playing it will be like. The title is still really weird though.

2. Ys Seven
Release Date: Q3 2010
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRQ5KDqE6dc&fmt=18

Well with the announcement yesterday that this was coming out in English thanks to XSEED this immediately shot up to #2 on my list and was also what got me thinking about what other games I was looking forward to this year. I had always heard a lot of Ys, but I didn't really get to try it until Ys Book I+II came out on the Virtual Console. From that point I was instantly hooked and it became one of my favorite RPG series of all time. After that I played SNES versions of 3 and 4, then I acquired the Turbo CD version of the other Ys 4 from a friend and then the PS2 version of Ys 6. Still haven't played Ys 5 because there was never a fan translation for it and I'm waiting to play the remake of 3 on PSP because that's coming out in English as well.

Ever since laying eyes on the first trailer of Ys Seven I was instantly and loved and was seriously considering importing it too one day. Thanks to XSEED they've saved me from making such an expenditure!

1. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Release Date: Summer 2010
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/japanese-overview-dragon-quest/51593

I'm just telling you now, this game has a boat. I'm also telling you right now this game is specifically the reason I bought a DSi. Not only because of the larger screen, but because of this

http://www.shopncsx.com/images1/products/detail/dq_case_dsi.jpg
http://www.el33tonline.com/images/cache/4042.jpg

I imported one of those protective cases to make my DSi look like the black one in that second picture and it's been ready to go ever since. Dragon Quest is my favorite RPG series and while we've had our ups and downs I'll always love it to the end. I 'purchased' this game back when it came out and played through a few hours of it and it only confirmed that I would love it so I'm just counting down the days until it comes out in English.
